Description: This Painted Lady caterpillar was collected from Italian Thistle (Carduus pycnocephalus) on 3 May 2013 and reared on Italian Thistle leaves. Eight days later, when this photo was taken, the caterpillar was nearly 4 cm long -- presumably stage L5. The next day it climbed to the top of the container and formed a "J" shape, and the day after that it pupated.
